Rooted in loyalty…
One hundred thirty-three local farmers who founded this cooperative were disappointed with private grain merchants. They organized one of the first farmer-owned co-ops in the state and made it clear they would be true to their own needs. Their loyalty would be to each other.
Since December 2, 1890, the business needs of farmers have changed but that loyalty remains intact. We can no longer build an elevator for $2,998, but we can still provide leadership through a board elected from and by our members.
Our financial strength is clear: we are every bit as profitable as companies twice our size. Our determination to keep our patron equity current is obvious: few co-ops can match our record. Our dedication to this organization’s original purpose shines through.
Here are some highlights of our long, proud history:
- First elevator built in 1898.
- Downtown Sleepy Eye location built in 1921 at a cost of $44,409.
- In 1983 Farmers Elevator Company merged with Brown County Coop Oil, launched in 1925.
- Company purchased Cargill facility in 1984 to increase storage and unit-train capability.
- New office at the West Elevator location constructed in 1987.
- Modern feed mill built in 1988.
- Fertilizer plant expansion completed in 2000.
- Farmers Elevator merged with Community Co-op Oil to become River Region Cooperative in 2003.
- Seed Warehouse completed at Agronomy East location in 2006.
- East Elevator was remodeled and expanded in 2007.
